Early Bird Special for 2012
Gwen is determined to get the message across to as many children and parents as possible about the important role trees play in enhancing our daily lives and mitigating climate change. Therefore, for the months of April, October, and November 2012, she is willing to do her Meet the Author presentation for free. She normally charges $200 for 3 presentations. All that is required is that teachers and librarians discuss with the students the author visit and give students an opportunity to buy her books. A sample letter to go home with students and pre-visit activities will be provided.
Author, illustrator, environmentalist, photographer, and educator Gwen Petreman has launched 5 children's picture books since 2010. The Blue Bottle- This is a spellbinding fantasy story about a monster with dire plans for the environment. The second part is loaded with information about the important role trees play in our environment. Aesop's Fables –It consists of 20 of Aesop's most beloved fables rewritten at 3 different reading levels. Parents and teachers love this book as children of different reading abilities can read from the same book. A Wish for Haidan- This fairy tale, while shining a light on the environment, tells the story of a young boy who is granted 3 wishes on one condition. Trying to meet this condition brings astonishing changes to his environment and his life. It's Halloween I'm Scared –The spine-chilling creatures lurking on the pages of this pattern story create the perfect formula for a hair-raising Halloween. Laura's Loose Tooth -This charming story bursting with rhyme and rhythm is written in a pleasing singsong style and guarantees to capture the hearts of young and old. Laura's heartfelt letter to the Tooth Fairy contains an unusual request that leaves parents cheering.

Gwen Petreman Author, Illustrator, Environmentalist , Educator Reviews by Teacher-Librarians and Classroom Teachers Cookstown Central Public School was delighted to have Gwen visit and share her knowledge and expertise about good character traits and the importance of being eco-friendly. During all three presentations, for grades one, two, and three, the students were engaged in critical thinking skills involving fantasy and reality with The Blue Bottle along with learning some important techniques involved in writing and illustrating. The students were left with much to reflect upon and were given ideas to implement back in their classroom and in the community. Many students were excited to purchase both The Blue Bottle and Gwen’s other book, Aesop’s Fables. During the presentation, Gwen was able to announce that her third book is being published and we will be inviting her back next school year to share this accomplishment with us and to revisit the connections that were made this year. We hosted Gwen at Shanty Bay PS during Earth week this year! Her presentation was the embodiment of environmental concern and respect! The children learned about Rainforest animals and numerous plants and took away artistic lessons to enrich their own love for nature. Her enthusiasm towards keeping our world green was contagious and the children loved being able to take home a signed copy of their favourite book from her presentation! It was a wonderful way to combine literacy, art and environmental studies in my Library! J Kimberly Sturge Teacher/Librarian at Shanty Bay PS |
